During my first piano lesson with a 10-year-old student, I played Grieg’s Little Bird and asked her to guess the title. She got it right, immediately saying, “Little Bird.” Ever since, she’s loved imitating a bird on the piano in every lesson, trying to capture Grieg’s style.
That moment inspired me to compose a simple piece for her in the same spirit, which I called Sparrow. Now, she plays it with great joy.
I never imagined I’d start composing piano pieces for my students, but I’ve become captivated by the process. It has led me to create more simple pieces for beginners. Some of them start with the same motif, showing how a single musical idea can take on different identities.
